Course Goals

This course is designed to help Hickman County Middle School Teachers develop their own Edmodo site for their classroom as well as learn about how to fully utilize and manage the tools that the site offers.

Description of Activities

Pre-Assessment (two weeks prior) – course participants will be asked to complete an online survey of their current technology use in the classroom. The survey will help determine prior knowledge of Edmodo as well as how much technology is used during instruction. (See Appendix)

Why  Edmodo?  – Alyssa Rose, from Boise State MET program, will present a short Prezi explaining benefits of using Edmodo.  (Topics will also include: Digital Citizenship and project ideas for using Edmodo)

Creation and Exploration Part One:  Getting Started- during this section teachers will be watching videos on setting up their Edmodo account and inviting students to join. This section will also cover ideas for lessons on Digital Citizenship and parent involvement. After watching the videos, teachers will begin their own setup and walk through the steps to personalize their profile and account settings. Teachers will write down 3 questions, concerns or kudos on post it notes and post them on the “Parking lot” (Big Idea Board) in the room.

Creation and Exploration Part Two:  Features- During this exploratory session, teachers will learn about group features, using posts and wall feeds, managing their library, creating quizzes, polls and badges, and how to manage all of these resources. Teachers will be walked step-by-step through the process  of creating and managing all of these resources and then coming up with 5 post-it note ideas of how to use these tools in lessons they teach. Their ideas will be posted in the group “Parking Lot” (Big Idea Board) in the room.

Creation and Exploration Part Three:  Connections- During this exploratory session, teachers will learn about connecting with other teachers on Edmodo, follow and utilize other communities, find teachers in a community, search for lessons,  utilize free apps, mobile and iPad apps, as well as receiving live support after the training. The facilitator will guide the teachers through the site  to focus on these items and then teachers will post 3 resources, communities or ideas that they can use in their classroom on the “Parking Lot” (Big Idea Board) in the room.

Break it Down: At the end of each exploratory session, the facilitator will review and answer any questions, comments or concerns that came up from the “Parking Lot”. Teachers will also be given a chance to ask clarifying questions before moving on.

Unit Development: Ideas for using Edmodo in the classroom video will be shown. Teachers will be broken up into subject matter groups. As a group they will brainstorm ideas on how to use Edmodo for their units of study. Each group will  come up with the ideas for posts, discussions, badges, and other assessments. They will work to create a few lessons in their group page. At the end of the session, groups will share what they have come up with.

Reflection: Teachers will be asked to reflect on the experience and how it will impact the future of their classroom. (See Appendix)

Follow-up Survey: Teachers will be given a survey to complete 4 months later, to assess how they are using Edmodo in the classroom and students will be given a survey to fill out on their use of Edmodo in the classroom. (See Appendix)
